Essential Cultural Guidelines for Respectful Travel

Welcome to Zanzibar: A Guide to Cultural Respect

Zanzibar is a culturally rich and predominantly Muslim society, known for its warm hospitality and deep-rooted traditions. Visitors are warmly welcomed, and embracing a little cultural awareness goes a long way in ensuring a respectful, meaningful, and enjoyable stay.

Dress modestly

when visiting Stone Town, towns, and villages. Women are encouraged to cover their shoulders and wear skirts or trousers below the knee. Men should wear shirts in public areas.

Ask for permission

before photographing people or private homes. Most locals are happy to be photographed when asked politely.

Use licensed tour operators,

hotel-arranged transfers, or official government guides for excursions and transportation.

Be mindful of your personal safety

especially when walking on beaches late at night or early in the morning.

Avoid wearing bikinis, miniskirts, or revealing clothing

In towns and villages. Swimwear is appropriate only within hotel grounds or designated beach areas.

Do not go topless on beaches

Particularly where fishermen or seaweed farmers are working nearby.

Avoid drunken or disorderly behaviour

In public, as it is considered offensive in local culture, even though alcohol is widely available in hotels and restaurants.

Do not accept tours, transport, or services

From unlicensed “beach boys,” particularly in Stone Town, as these services are illegal and unreliable.
