Philosophy & Vision

At Jafferji House, tradition and innovation are deeply woven into our ethos. The hotel is a living expression of Zanzibar’s cultural heritage, brought to life through an exceptional collection of traditional furniture and artefacts personally selected by Javed Jafferji.

Throughout the property, guests encounter striking photographic works capturing Zanzibar’s people, landscapes, and heritage. Inspired by a lifelong passion for conservation and history, Javed transformed his ancestral home into a refined luxury retreat. After three years of meticulous restoration, the property now honours its past while offering modern comfort and understated elegance.

A Home with a Soul

Javed Jafferji and his wife, Kulsum Jafferji, warmly welcome guests into the refined ambience of their family home. Featuring three beautifully designed courtyards and elegantly decorated suites, the hotel creates a tranquil haven within Stone Town’s vibrant streets.

Guests are enveloped in comfort, serenity, and discreet luxury, ensuring a stay that is both deeply personal and truly memorable.

History of the Building

Jafferji House holds a rich history spanning more than 150 years. Originally constructed using sandstone, the building showcases rare Fatimid-style Coptic archwork preserved across generations.

Completed in 1912 by Walliji Dossaji, the house later passed to Karimjee Jivanjee and was acquired in 1945 by Hassan Bhai Jafferji. After arriving from Kutch, India, he established himself as a merchant and acquired the property through a trust-based agreement.

Despite the nationalisation of many properties after the 1964 Revolution, Jafferji House remained in the family. In 1993, Javed Jafferji opened the Zanzibar Gallery on the ground floor and continued living there until 2008.

From Family Home to Boutique Hotel

Inspired by a lifelong dream, Javed Jafferji began transforming his family home into a luxury boutique hotel. After four years of restoration, Jafferji House officially opened in 2012.

Today, the property carries a century-long legacy and continues to welcome guests from around the world seeking heritage, comfort, and authenticity.
